Former Florida Governor Buddy MacKay, a Democrat known for his commitment to the environment and minorities, has died at the age of 91. He briefly served as governor in 1998 after the sudden death of Gov. Lawton Chiles. MacKay also served as a state legislator, congressman, and diplomat. He lost three statewide elections but maintained a sense of humor. He was a strong advocate for desegregation, influenced by his time in the integrated military. MacKay is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren.
