In the heart of Sacramento, amidst the political hubbub, Governor Gavin Newsom didn’t hold back as he took aim at House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s pursuit of an impeachment of President Joe Biden. With a grin, he dubbed the effort “student government,” relishing the chance to jab at his longtime adversary, portraying him as a marionette of former President Donald Trump and the far-right faction of his party.
“Ah, my Kevin will do what he needs to do—or what he’s told to do,” Newsom quipped, echoing Trump’s purported moniker for the Republican leader. But he didn’t stop there; he swiftly shifted gears to shine a spotlight on McCarthy’s deep-red Bakersfield district, branding it the “murder capital of California.”
“It boasts a murder rate two and a half times higher than Nancy Pelosi’s San Francisco,” Newsom declared, his words brimming with political bite. Amid the rhetoric, he pointed to the area’s significant proportion of uninsured residents and children living in poverty, accusing McCarthy of overlooking these pressing concerns to instead focus on probing Biden and his son, Hunter.
Newsom’s mockery didn’t spare McCarthy’s recent about-face either. With a sly grin, he highlighted how McCarthy had backtracked on his commitment to seek a floor vote to initiate the impeachment inquiries, opting instead for a unilateral decision—a move that had been emphasized just a mere 11 days prior. In Newsom’s eyes, it was all too much to swallow.
