With the recent retirement announcement of Sen. Mitt Romney, a surge of excitement is building among hawkish conservatives on Capitol Hill, and a familiar name has emerged as their rallying point: Robert O’Brien.
These fervent proponents, who wish to see Donald Trump’s former national security advisor leap into what promises to be a highly competitive primary to replace Romney, argue that O’Brien’s extensive national security background, particularly his expertise in dealing with China, would not only set him apart but also make him a formidable addition to the Senate. Crucially, it’s essential to note that there is currently no indication that O’Brien is considering a bid.
“I am one of the Republicans encouraging him to run,” declared Rep. Mike Waltz (R-Fla.) in an interview with POLITICO, his enthusiasm palpable. “Given his legal and foreign policy experience, I think he’d make a great senator for Utah.”
Another prominent figure chiming in is Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.), who chairs the House China Select Committee. Gallagher, renowned for his hawkish stance on China, disclosed that he has recently had discussions with O’Brien regarding the Utah Senate race, ignited by Romney’s decision not to seek re-election in 2024. He effused, stating that O’Brien would be an “incredible leader on issues,” especially concerning the fierce U.S.-China competition.
Some in political circles harbor the belief that O’Brien could be well-positioned to secure Donald Trump’s coveted endorsement, although the former president has exercised more caution in his Senate endorsements this time around compared to the 2022 campaign. Up to this point, Trump has only thrown his support behind Rep. Jim Banks (R-Ind.), who faces no opposition in the GOP primary for an open Indiana Senate seat.
As the speculation swirls and excitement mounts, the prospect of O’Brien entering the Utah Senate race adds an electrifying dimension to the political landscape.
