Republican Rep. Mike Lawler didn’t mince words as he lashed out at House GOP hardliners, accusing them of engaging in “stupid games” that are ultimately “screwing the American people” as the looming government shutdown casts a dark shadow over Capitol Hill.
In a fiery radio interview with conservative host Hugh Hewitt, Lawler (R-N.Y.) let loose, declaring, “I didn’t come here to shut the government down or play stupid games so we could raise $5 donations by claiming we’re doing something and sticking it to the administration, when in fact all they would be doing is screwing the American people.”
These scathing remarks from Lawler come in the midst of a tumultuous week in the House, where legislation to fund the government has stumbled in the face of fierce Republican infighting. Hardline conservatives, steadfast in their commitment to oppose any stopgap measures, have only added to the chaos. Lawler stands apart from the Republican ranks as one of the few willing to collaborate with Democrats on a spending plan, making his voice a distinct one in the party.
While House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has faced considerable criticism for the House’s inability to pass a spending bill, enduring his third rule defeat this year just days ago, Lawler remains a staunch defender of McCarthy’s leadership. In his unwavering support, Lawler praised McCarthy, asserting that he believes McCarthy is doing a “phenomenal job” and that he is a strong leader fighting daily to position the conference to better serve the American people and fulfill their elected duties.
