Stacey Abrams-founded group, New Georgia Project, has settled with the Georgia Ethics Commission and will pay a $300,000 fine for illegally spending millions to support Abrams’ 2018 gubernatorial bid. The group failed to disclose contributions and expenditures, and also violated state law by not registering as a political committee and not filing required reports. The fine is the largest ever imposed by the commission. The investigation into the group’s activity began in 2019 and has gone to court multiple times. A 2023 investigation revealed that the group’s former executive director owes thousands of dollars in reimbursements. Abrams founded the group in 2014 and Georgia Senator Raphael Warnock previously chaired it.
